You Can Prevent Colon Cancer

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in the United States each year. Up to 80% of colon cancer related deaths can be prevented by appropriate screening and removal of precancerous polyps, according to the American College of Gastroenterology.

Various colorectal screening exams are available, and the goal of the exam is to get the best possible view of the entire inside of the colon so as to identify and remove precancerous lesions such as polyps (or growths) before they become life threatening. These relatively simple screening exams can very often prevent colon cancer.

The reliability of these examinations depends on the skill, experience, and expertise of your physician. That is why it is important to be seen by a gastroenterologist, a specialist in diagnosing and treating problems with the gastrointestinal system.

Please be sure to discuss colorectal screening exams with your physician. For more information contact a gastroenterologist at the Fremont Surgery Center.
